Sporting youngsters get Berlin trip backing

07 October 2009
Karate kids in Hereford who are to represent the UK at an international tournament have received a funding boost from a leading social landlord.   The 35 members of the Central Dojo Karate Club are to travel to Berlin at the end of October and have been training hard for their defence of national pride.   Funding the trip takes a big effort from the club and member’s families, so after receiving a plea from the mother of a member, Freya Robinson of Barton Place Hereford, Shropshire Housing Group has stepped in with a £500 donation towards the costs.   A number of other events have been held by the members and their families, including a fun and food night, a mini tournament and a raffle. A bag-packing day for customers at Morrison’s supermarket is also planned.   The youngsters are training hard for the visit to Germany, with sometimes six or more sessions per week.   Chief executive of Shropshire Housing Group, Martin Holland, said: “The karate club is a great thing for the youngsters to be involved in and they are justifiably proud to be representing the UK in Berlin.   “They work very hard to make it possible, so we we’re only too pleased to be able to help toward their costs. We wish the team every success and I’m confident they will do their very best.”   Squad leader at the club, Gemma Atkin, added: “This is a very important tournament for our young members and they do everything they can to make sure we can be there. Shropshire Housing Group’s support is extremely welcome and everyone at the club is grateful for its help.”
